WPC has the resources and the expertise to perform tests on both the raw material and the manufactured product at various stages of processing. WPC has made, and continues to make, significant investments in state of the art capabilities to provide customers with products that are backed by rigorous and certified testing.

Melt flow testing on incoming resin is used to ensure only raw material batches that meet Westlake’s rigorous requirements are released and used in the extrusion process. Melt flow is a characteristic of how well the resin melts in the extrusion process. WPC utilizes comprehensive and versatile knowledge of tooling and process monitoring when evaluating incoming raw material to execute an optimum production run.
WPC’s expertise is in high-temperature and high-pressure conversion of resin into stock shapes. The impact of these processes on the thermal property and the dimensional stability of the product is assessed through DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) testing. The DSC Test evaluates how much heat energy is absorbed and emitted when a sample of the material is melted and then cooled down. Sophisticated software captures and analyzes these thermal responses to provide WPC with a number of data points, such as the amount of crystallization of the product.
Press-out testing is used to detect any foreign inclusions within the incoming resin. A sample of the material is pressed under high heat, designed to force any foreign material to be evident. The press-out is evaluated over a light table designed to maximize light through the sample, ensuring the detection of any surface or interior inclusions.
Since color is of critical importance, both product and raw material samples are inspected inside a light box which produces lighting within a standardized spectrum – in this case a color temperature over 5000K degrees to emulate natural daylight. This removes subjectivity in color assessment, providing objective, verifiable characterization of the color of the samples evaluated.
Each formed product is evaluated using advanced Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) for internal consistency. WPC uses state of the art ultrasonic testing to quickly and thoroughly examine the interior of the formed product and screen out any unacceptable product.
For customers who plan to convert WPC produced material into products that will be put under force or stress, we have the means to provide mechanical property data. Tensile testing per ASTM D638 guidelines provide product engineers with the precise performance data they need to design their product. WPC has the means to provide tensile testing data such as Yield Stress, Break Stress, or Elongation.
Some applications require good impact performance – where the end product experiences sharp, elevated, short-term applications of force. WPC has a range of products that can meet these requirements and the testing capability to provide the data characterizing the impact performance in terms that are useful for product designers. The WPC IZOD Impact Testing capability is ASTM D256 compliant.
